Originally from Austin, TX, Cory moved around a lot as a child due to having two musician parents. In middle school he became interested in animation, and he first started working at the age of fifteen after he "crashed a cartoonist party... [with his] sketchbook full of dirty drawings."
Several of the cartoonists suggested he intern at a local animation studio, and he did so for a month before moving up. Cory originally did animation work directed towards a more adult audience, but he eventually changed his direction and began working on more kid-oriented shows.
Cory has worked on various other programs. He worked as a layout artist for Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon." He also worked as a character designer for The X's, The Mighty B!, The Ricky Gervais Show, Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, and in he also worked as a storyboard revisionist for Adventure Time.
Cory is well known for his work as a prop and character designer on SpongeBob Squarepants from 2005-2010. He later returned to work as a character designer for the 2015 film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
Cory has been nominated for several awards in the past, and in 2012 won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for "Outstanding Individual in Animation" at the 64th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his work on the Secret Mountain Fort Awesome episode "Nightmare Sauce."
He is currently working as a character designer for Gravity Falls.
